UNODC Executive Director visits drug treatment centre in Tehran

20July 2011 - With 1.2 million drug-dependent users, the Islamic Republic of Iran has one of the most severe addiction problem in the world. Opiate addiction is equivalent to 2.26 per cent of the population aged 15-64 years. More than one fifth of them are injecting drug users. The Iranian Government has been recognised as one of the pioneering countries in the region to offer opium substitution therapies, as well as running free HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment centres for drug users.

This visit was among the serial visits of Fdotov in Iran that was cooperated with Dr. Soltanie the permanent representative of Iran in Vienna and Antonino De Leo representative of UNODC office of Iran.

Mini Dublin Group visits Vardich Stimulants Treatment Center

Mini Dublin Group Reps and Antonino DeLeo, representative of UNODC office in Iran cooperated with Dr. Mostashari, UNODC expert visited some Amphetamine patients and got familiar with their recovery process. Danish and Norwegian representatives visited Rebirth club Bahar 84 in Shahre Rei

Launch of Rebirth centers in neighboring countries

Managing director of Rebirth Society: we are going to launch some treatment branches of Rebirth in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and some other regional countries and this society would expand its activities from national to international levels.

No profession for drug cession in the world

Seyed Frouhar Tashvighi, the founder of Rebirth Society, expressed his joy towards social workers’ success in the second graduation ceremony of drug use social works that held today in Interior Ministry Hall and said: Iran has taken the lead from the developed countries such as US in establishment of drug use cessation clubs during 17 past years.

Need of country to 10,000 social workers to control drug use

Welfare Organization should increase its supports on social working and residency centers for drug users. In this regard, the only request is to observe the acceptance of 1000 social workers bylaw. According to executive authorities’ report and needs of the country, we will need 10,000 social workers in 5 years ahead.

Welfare Organization not supports drug use cessation centers

Dr. Mostafa Eghlima, in the second graduation ceremony of drug use social working in interior ministry Hall said: we have appropriate laws but the fact is that they are not being executed well. For instance an organization such as Welfare whose duty is to support drug cessation should be more concerned towards social workers.

Our Mission

We tried to design and organize the process of drug cessation, drug demand reduction, prevention and harm reduction gradually in an organized manner and according to our regional, religious and national culture.

Facing this problem and reducing harms and their aftermaths are just achievable by support of ultra organization authorities and powers, non-governmental movements specially those who have experienced it themselves besides related organizations.

According what is mentioned above it is not hard to realize the great mission this society has to do. Our mission is to rescue drug users and prevent our children to be addicted by strategy of utilizing prevention and treatment tools.

The Rebirth Charity Organization is a non-governmental entity and a forerunner in Drug Demand Reduction. It is the only NGO in Iran that holds a ISO9001(quality management) in treatment,and has also been awarded the United Nations civil society award as the most successful NGO in the domain of drug abuse. Since its inception in 2000, based on principles of faith and supported by the government and people, particularly the recovered drug user s and their families, Rebirth has established 110 short term residential centers in more than 26 provinces throughout the country. These centers have an overall recovery capacity of 100,000 people per year and are functioning under faith-based and abstinence based methodologies.

The linchpin of Rebirth’s approach is the faith based and abstinence based model. This modelhas been approved and adopted by the country’s health care systemas the first medication-free treatment protocol and has served as an exemplary model in the country over the past ten years. Currently more than one hundred NGOs throughout the country have adopted Rebirth’s model.

The treatment approach at Rebirth revolves around the faith based and abstinence based methodologywhich is established with the assistance of recovered drug usersto current drug users.
